### **Technical Data Sheet: Alloy 25 (L605 / Haynes 25 / UNS R30605)** **A Cobalt-Chromium-Tungsten-Nickel Superalloy for High-Temperature and Severe Environments** #### **1. Overview** **Alloy 25**, also known commercially as **Haynes 25** or by its common designation **L605**, is a solid-solution strengthened cobalt-chromium-tungsten-nickel superalloy. It is renowned for its exceptional combination of: * **High-Temperature Strength:** Excellent tensile and creep strength up to 980°C (1800°F). * **Outstanding Oxidation Resistance:** Superior resistance to oxidizing atmospheres up to 1150°C (2100°F). * **Good Sulfidation Resistance:** Performs well in sulfidizing environments. * **Excellent Hot Corrosion Resistance:** Resists degradation from salt and other corrosive deposits. * **High Abrasion/Wear Resistance:** Inherently good wear characteristics. Unlike precipitation-hardened nickel alloys, L605 derives its strength directly from the solid-solution strengthening effect of its alloying elements, primarily tungsten, making it stable and not prone to age-embrittlement after long-term exposure. It is also readily fabricable and weldable. #### **2. Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)** The composition is balanced for optimal high-temperature performance and environmental resistance. | Element | Content (%) | Role in the Alloy | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Cobalt (Co)** | Balance | Provides the base matrix and solid-solution strength; imparts inherent wear resistance. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 19.0 - 21.0 | Confers outstanding oxidation and hot corrosion resistance. | | **Tungsten (W)** | 14.0 - 16.0 | Primary solid-solution strengthener; significantly enhances high-temperature strength. | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 9.0 - 11.0 | Stabilizes the FCC (face-centered cubic) structure, improving ductility and fabricability. | | **Iron (Fe)** | 3.0 max | Impurity control. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.0 - 2.0 | Aids in sulfur control and improves hot workability. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.30 - 0.60 | Deoxidizer during melting; improves oxidation resistance. | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.05 - 0.15 | Forms carbides for improved wear resistance and modest grain boundary strengthening. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.03 max | Impurity control. | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.03 max | Impurity control. | #### **3. Physical Properties** | Property | Value / Condition | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 9.13 g/cm³ (0.330 lb/in³) | | **Melting Point** | ~1330 - 1410 °C (~2425 - 2570 °F) | | **Specific Heat Capacity** | ~ 420 J/kg·K (at 20°C) | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 9.6 W/m·K (at 20°C); Increases with temperature. | | **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion** | 12.5 μm/m·K (20 - 100°C); 17.8 μm/m·K (20 - 1000°C) | | **Electrical Resistivity** | ~ 0.92 μΩ·m | | **Magnetic Permeability** | Essentially non-magnetic | #### **4. Mechanical Properties (Typical for Annealed Condition)** * **Room Temperature Tensile Properties:** * **Tensile Strength:** 950 - 1200 MPa (138 - 174 ksi) * **0.2% Yield Strength:** 450 - 600 MPa (65 - 87 ksi) * **Elongation:** 50 - 60% * **Hardness:** Rockwell B 95 - 105 * **High-Temperature Strength:** * Retains significant strength at elevated temperatures. For example, at 870°C (1600°F), it typically maintains a tensile strength of over 200 MPa (29 ksi). * Excellent **creep rupture strength** and stress-to-rupture capability. #### **5. International Standards & Specifications** Alloy 25 / L605 is covered by a wide range of international standards for various product forms. | Standard Organization | Standard Designation | Form | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Aerospace (SAE/AMS)** | **AMS 5537** | Sheet, Strip, and Plate | | **Aerospace (SAE/AMS)** | **AMS 5759** | Bar, Forgings, and Rings | | **ASTM International** | **ASTM F90** | Bar, Wire, Sheet, Strip, and Plate | | **Unified Numbering System (UNS)** | **UNS R30605** | All Forms | | **European (EN)** | **2.4964** (Material Number) | - | | **AECMA (PrEN)** | **PrEN 3980** | - | #### **6. Product Applications** L605 is a versatile alloy used across several high-performance industries: * **Aerospace & Gas Turbine Engines:** * **Combustor Liners and Flame Holders** * **Turbine Nozzle Guides and Vanes** * **Afterburner Components** * **Exhaust Seals and Ducting** * **Spray Bars** * **Medical Devices:** * **Orthopedic Implants:** Particularly in load-bearing applications like hip and knee stems due to its high strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. * **Surgical Instruments** (for longevity and corrosion resistance). * **Industrial & Chemical Processing:** * Heat treatment fixtures (baskets, trays). * Components in furnaces and radiant tubes. * Fasteners and components for severe environments. * **Other Applications:** * **Aerospace Fasteners** * **Hot Extrusion Tooling** #### **7. Similar & Competing Alloys** * **Haynes 188:** Another cobalt-based alloy with superior oxidation resistance and slightly different strength profile due to Lanthanum addition. * **Hastelloy X (UNS N06002):** A nickel-based alloy with excellent strength and oxidation resistance, often used in similar gas turbine applications. * **Inconel 617 (UNS N06617):** A nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy with very high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. * **Stellite 6:** A cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy primarily known for extreme wear resistance, with lower high-temperature strength than L605. **Key Differentiator of L605:** It offers one of the best all-around combinations of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, fabricability, and wear resistance among the cobalt-based superalloys. --- **Disclaimer:** This data sheet is for informational purposes only.
