**Technical Data Sheet: Alloy 188 / Udimet 188 Forgings / UNS R30188** **Cobalt-Chromium-Nickel-Tungsten Superalloy Forgings** --- ### **1. Product Overview** Alloy 188 Forgings (commercially known as Udimet 188 Forgings or Haynes 188 Forgings, UNS R30188) are manufactured through controlled thermomechanical processes that optimize the microstructure and mechanical properties of this cobalt-based superalloy. The forging process enhances grain structure, eliminates porosity, and improves directional strength, resulting in components with superior performance at temperatures up to **1100°C (2012°F)**. --- ### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %)** | Element | Content (%) | Key Role | |---------|-------------|----------| | Cobalt (Co) | Balance | High-temperature matrix | | Chromium (Cr) | 20.0–24.0 | Oxidation resistance | | Nickel (Ni) | 20.0–24.0 | Austenitic stabilization | | Tungsten (W) | 13.0–15.0 | Solid-solution strengthening | | Lanthanum (La) | 0.03–0.12 | Scale adhesion | | Iron (Fe) | ≤ 3.0 | Residual | | Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.25 | Hot workability | | Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.20 | Residual | | Carbon (C) | 0.05–0.15 | Carbide formation | | Boron (B) | ≤ 0.015 | Grain boundary strength | --- ### **3. Physical Properties** | Property | Value | |----------|-------| | Density | 9.13 g/cm³ | | Melting Range | 1330–1380°C | | Thermal Conductivity | 10.1 W/m·K at 100°C | | Coefficient of Thermal Expansion | 12.3 μm/m·°C (20–100°C) | | Electrical Resistivity | 1.02 μΩ·m | | Magnetic Permeability | Essentially non-magnetic | --- ### **4. Mechanical Properties** **Room Temperature Properties (Solution Annealed):** - Tensile Strength: 965 MPa min (140 ksi min) - Yield Strength (0.2% Offset): 485 MPa min (70 ksi min) - Elongation: 50% min - Reduction of Area: 60% min - Hardness: 85–100 HRB **Elevated Temperature Performance:** - Stress Rupture Strength: 48 MPa at 980°C/100h - Creep Strength: 35 MPa at 1000°C/1000h - Maximum Service Temperature: 1150°C (intermittent) --- ### **5. Forging Process & Capabilities** **Forging Methods:** - Open-die forgings - Closed-die forgings - Ring rolling - Press forgings **Size Range:** - Weight: 1 kg to 2000 kg - Maximum dimensions: 3000 mm length - Ring sizes: 200 mm to 3000 mm OD **Heat Treatment:** - Solution Annealing: 1230°C ± 15°C - Quenching: Rapid air or water cool - Stress Relieving: 870–900°C as required --- ### **6. Applications** **Aerospace & Defense:** - Turbine shafts and disks - Engine mounting components - Afterburner parts - Rocket motor components **Power Generation:** - Gas turbine wheels - Turbine blades and vanes - Combustion chamber components - Nuclear reactor core components **Industrial Equipment:** - High-temperature valves - Pump shafts and components - Heat treatment fixtures - Chemical processing equipment --- ### **7.
