---
#### **5. Key Advantages & Processing Guidelines**
* **Superior Strength-to-Toughness Ratio:** Offers significantly better fracture toughness than other ultra-high-strength steels at comparable strength levels.
* **Excellent Fatigue Performance:** High resistance to crack initiation under cyclic loading.
* **Machinable in Annealed Condition:** Supplied soft (typically ~ 285 HB) for efficient machining into complex shapes prior to final heat treatment.
**Critical Processing Notes for Rod Product:**
1. **Machining:** All significant machining, drilling, and grinding **must** be performed in the annealed condition.
2. **Heat Treatment:** The final ultra-high strength is achieved through a precise, three-step heat treatment prescribed by AMS 6532:
    *   **Austenitizing:** ~ 900°C (1650°F)
    * **Quenching:** In oil or air.
    * **Aging (Tempering):** ~ 480°C (900°F) to precipitate fine alloy carbides (secondary hardening).
3. **Post-Treatment Machining:** After final heat treatment, the material is extremely hard; only grinding or EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) should be used for final dimensional adjustments.
4. **Welding:** Not generally recommended for component fabrication. Requires extreme caution and specialized post-weld heat treatment.
**For optimal performance, component design and processing of Aermet 100 Rod must adhere strictly to the supplier's and AMS specifications.**
