**Technical Datasheet: Alloy S / Hastelloy® S / UNS N06635** **Other Specifications & Similar Grades** --- ### **Overview** Alloy S (UNS N06635), commonly known by the trade name **Hastelloy® S**, is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy engineered for exceptional high-temperature stability, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. Its unique composition, including lanthanum for improved oxide scale adhesion, makes it ideal for applications involving thermal cycling, oxidizing atmospheres, and sulfidizing or carburizing conditions up to 1200°C (2200°F). This datasheet covers additional specifications, comparable grades, and supplementary technical details. --- ### **Chemical Composition (Weight %)** | Element | Content (%) | Role | |----------|-------------|------| | Nickel (Ni) | Balance (~67%) | Base matrix, thermal stability | | Chromium (Cr) | 14.0–16.0 | Oxidation/sulfidation resistance | | Molybdenum (Mo) | 14.0–16.0 | Strength in reducing environments | | Iron (Fe) | ≤3.0 | Residual | | Tungsten (W) | ≤1.0 | Solid solution strengthening | | Cobalt (Co) | ≤2.0 | Residual control | | Manganese (Mn) | ≤0.50 | Hot workability | | Silicon (Si) | ≤0.40 | Oxidation resistance | | **Lanthanum (La)** | **≥0.02** | **Oxide scale adhesion** | | Carbon (C) | ≤0.015 | Low carbon for stability | | Boron (B) | ≤0.010 | Creep ductility | --- ### **Physical Properties** | Property | Value | |----------|-------| | Density | 8.86 g/cm³ | | Melting Range | 1335–1380°C | | Thermal Conductivity (20°C) | 11.0 W/m·K | | Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20–100°C) | 12.8 μm/m·°C | | Modulus of Elasticity | 211 GPa | | Specific Heat Capacity | 427 J/kg·K | --- ### **Mechanical Properties (Typical)** - **Tensile Strength**: ≥795 MPa - **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)**: ≥345 MPa - **Elongation**: ≥35% - **Hardness**: ≤HB 210 --- ### **Product Applications** Alloy S is used in components requiring long-term exposure to high temperatures and corrosive media: 1. **Industrial Furnaces**: Radiant tubes, retorts, muffles, and fixtures. 2. **Aerospace**: Combustion chambers, turbine seals, and afterburner components. 3. **Chemical Processing**: Reactors, heat exchangers, and catalyst support systems. 4. **Power Generation**: Gas turbine parts, heat recovery systems. 5. **Glass & Ceramics**: Mandrels, forming tools, and hot-end components. --- ### **International Standards & Equivalent Specifications** | Region/Standard | Equivalent Designation | |-----------------|------------------------| | **UNS** | N06635 | | **ASTM** | B575 (Sheet/Strip/Plate), B564 (Forgings), B622 (Seamless Tube) | | **ASME** | SB-575, SB-564, SB-622 | | **SAE/AMS** | AMS 5772 (Bars/Forgings), AMS 5790 (Sheet/Strip/Plate) | | **ISO** | NiCr15Mo15Fe (Similar category) | | **DIN** | 2.4858 (Analogous Ni-Cr-Mo alloy) | | **JIS** | NCF 6015 (Similar composition) | --- ### **Similar & Alternative Alloys** While Alloy S is unique, the following alloys share overlapping properties for specific conditions: - **Hastelloy X** (UNS N06002): Higher iron, good oxidation resistance. - **Inconel 617** (UNS N06617): Cobalt-containing, suited for very high temperatures. - **Haynes 230** (UNS N06230): Tungsten-strengthened, excellent stability. - **Nimonic 80A** (UNS N07080): Chromium-rich, for turbine components. --- ### **Fabrication Notes** - **Welding**: Use matching filler metals (e.g., ERNiCrMo-14). GTAW/GMAW recommended. - **Heat Treatment**: Solution anneal at 1177°C min., followed by rapid cooling. - **Machining**: Use rigid tools, positive rake angles, and adequate cooling. - **Forming**: Cold and hot workable; anneal between steps for severe deformation. --- ### **Quality & Certification** - Certifications include EN 10204 3.1/3.2. - Testing per ASTM E354 (chemical analysis), E8 (tensile), and A262 (intergranular corrosion). - Ultrasonic, dye penetrant, or radiographic inspection available. --- ### **Notes** - **Hastelloy®** is a registered trademark of Haynes International. - Properties may vary with processing; verify specifications for critical applications. - Alloy S is distinct in its lanthanum modification, providing unmatched scale adhesion under thermal cycling. --- *For specific dimensions, tolerances, or custom requirements, consult technical data sheets from certified manufacturers.*
