### **Technical Datasheet: NiAl 97/3 (Nickel Aluminum) Alloy** **Classification:** Nickel-Aluminum Intermetallic Compound **Common Names:** NiAl 97/3, Nickel Aluminum Intermetallic **Chemical Formula:** NiAl (with 3% excess Ni) --- #### **1.0 Introduction** **NiAl 97/3** is a nickel-aluminum intermetallic compound with a nominal composition of approximately 97% nickel and 3% aluminum. This alloy belongs to the family of ordered intermetallic compounds characterized by a B2 (CsCl-type) crystal structure. Unlike conventional alloys, NiAl exhibits unique properties including **high melting point, excellent oxidation resistance, low density, and good thermal conductivity**. These characteristics make it particularly attractive for high-temperature structural applications, especially in aerospace and turbine industries. --- #### **2.0 Chemical Composition (Atomic %)** | Element | Minimum | Maximum | Key Function | |---------|---------|---------|--------------| | **Nickel (Ni)** | 96.5 | 97.5 | Forms B2 intermetallic matrix | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 2.5 | 3.5 | Creates ordered intermetallic structure | *Note: The composition may vary slightly depending on manufacturing process and application requirements.* --- #### **3.0 Physical Properties** | Property | Value | Condition | |----------|-------|-----------| | **Density** | 5.86 g/cm³ (0.212 lb/in³) | Room temperature | | **Melting Point** | 1638°C (2980°F) | - | | **Thermal Expansion** | 14.5-15.5 μm/m·°C | 25-1000°C | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 70-85 W/m·K | Room temperature | | **Electrical Resistivity** | 15-25 μΩ·cm | Room temperature | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 193-210 GPa (28-30.5×10⁶ psi) | Room temperature | | **Crystal Structure** | B2 (Ordered Body-Centered Cubic) | - | --- #### **4.0 Mechanical Properties** | Property | Value | Condition | |----------|-------|-----------| | **Vickers Hardness** | 300-400 HV | Room temperature | | **Compressive Strength** | 800-1200 MPa | Room temperature | | **Fracture Toughness** | 4-8 MPa·m¹/² | Room temperature | | **Creep Resistance** | Excellent | 800-1200°C | *Note: Mechanical properties are highly dependent on processing methods and microstructure.* --- #### **5.0 Key Characteristics & Applications** **5.1 Key Characteristics:** - **High Temperature Capability**: Maintains strength and stability up to 1200°C - **Excellent Oxidation Resistance**: Forms protective Al₂O₃ scale at high temperatures - **Low Density**: Approximately 2/3 the density of conventional nickel superalloys - **Good Thermal Conductivity**: Superior to most superalloys - **Environmental Resistance**: Excellent resistance to sulfidation and hot corrosion - **Room Temperature Brittleness**: Limited ductility at low temperatures **5.2 Primary Applications:** - **Aerospace Components**: Turbine blades, vanes, and other hot-section parts - **Protective Coatings**: Bond coats for thermal barrier coating systems - **High-Temperature Structural Parts**: Heating elements, furnace fixtures - **Electronic Applications**: Thin films and protective layers - **Composite Materials**: Matrix material for high-temperature composites --- #### **6.0 Manufacturing & Processing** **6.1 Production Methods:** - Vacuum induction melting - Powder metallurgy - Directional solidification - Physical vapor deposition (for coatings) - Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) **6.2 Processing Considerations:** - Requires controlled atmosphere processing to prevent oxidation - Limited room temperature ductility requires special handling - Can be joined by brazing and diffusion bonding - Machining typically requires diamond tools or EDM --- #### **7.0 International Standards** | Standard Type | Standard Number | Description | |---------------|----------------|-------------| | **Material Specification** | ASTM B886 | Standard Test Method for Determination of Metal Powder | | **Aerospace Material** | AMS 4979 | Nickel Alloy, Corrosion and Heat-Resistant | | **European Standard** | EN 10095 | Heat resisting steels and nickel alloys | | **Testing Standard** | ASTM E8/E8M | Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing | **Note:** NiAl 97/3 is often produced to manufacturer specifications rather than generic international standards due to its specialized nature. The alloy's properties can be significantly enhanced through alloying additions such as chromium, zirconium, and hafnium to improve fracture toughness and high-temperature performance.
