### **Product Introduction: MONEL® Alloy K-500 (UNS N05500)** **MONEL® Alloy K-500** is a precipitation-strengthened, age-hardenable version of the classic MONEL Alloy 400. It combines the excellent corrosion resistance of the nickel-copper system with the added advantage of significantly higher strength and hardness, achieved through the addition of aluminum and titanium. These elements form Ni₃(Ti,Al) precipitates during a controlled aging heat treatment, substantially increasing its mechanical properties. This alloy retains good ductility and low magnetic permeability, making it a premium material for high-performance applications in marine, oil and gas, and aerospace industries where both superior strength and outstanding corrosion resistance are required. --- ### **International Standards & Material Equivalents** MONEL Alloy K-500 is covered by a comprehensive set of international standards, with the DIN specifications provided being particularly relevant for European markets. | Standard Type | Standard Number | Designation / Purpose | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **UNS (USA)** | **N05500** | **MONEL Alloy K-500** | | **ASTM (USA)** | B865 | Rod, Bar, and Forgings | | **ASTM (USA)** | F468 | Nonferrous Bolts, Hex Cap Screws, and Studs | | **ASME (USA)** | SB-865 | Rod, Bar, and Forgings (Pressure Vessel Code) | | **DIN (Germany)** | **17743** | NiCu30Al (Wrought Alloy Composition) | | **DIN (Germany)** | **17752** | NiCu30AlTi (Cast Alloy Composition) | | **DIN (Germany)** | **17754** | Designation System for Wrought NiCu30Al | | **Werkstoff Nr.** | **2.4375** | **2.4375** | | **ISO** | 6207 | NW 30 (Wrought) | > **Note:** MONEL® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation. The key identifiers are **UNS N05500** and **Werkstoff 2.4375**. The DIN standards distinguish between the wrought (17743) and cast (17752) versions. --- ### **Chemical Composition** The composition is similar to MONEL 400 but includes aluminum and titanium for age-hardening. | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 63.0 min. | | **Copper (Cu)** | 27.0 - 33.0 | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 2.30 - 3.15 | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 0.35 - 0.85 | | **Iron (Fe)** | 2.0 max. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.5 max. | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.25 max. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.5 max. | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.01 max. | --- ### **Physical Properties** The physical properties are similar to MONEL 400, with the key difference being its non-magnetic nature even after aging. | Property | Value | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 8.44 g/cm³ (0.305 lb/in³) | | **Melting Point** | 1350 °C (2460 °F) | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 17 W/m·K (at 20°C) | | **Electrical Resistivity** | 0.65 μΩ·m (at 20°C) | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 179 GPa (26 x 10⁶ psi) | | **Magnetic Response** | **Essentially non-magnetic** (even in aged condition) | --- ### **Mechanical Properties (Typical for Aged Condition)** The mechanical properties are significantly enhanced after the precipitation heat treatment. | Property | Value (Aged Condition) | | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 965 - 1200 MPa (140 - 174 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 655 - 860 MPa (95 - 125 ksi) | | **Elongation** | 20% - 30% | | **Hardness (Rockwell C)** | 25 - 35 HRC | --- ### **Key Characteristics & Advantages** 1. **High Strength and Hardness:** Achieves strength levels nearly double those of MONEL 400 through precipitation hardening, while retaining good ductility. 2. **Excellent Corrosion Resistance:** Retains the excellent corrosion resistance of MONEL 400 in a wide range of environments, including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, alkalis, and many organic acids. 3. **Essentially Non-Magnetic:** A critical property for applications in marine instrumentation, geophysical exploration, and electronic systems where magnetic interference must be avoided. 4. **Good Fabricability:** Can be readily hot-worked and cold-worked in the solution-annealed condition. Machining should be performed in the annealed state before final aging. 5. **Trade-offs:** The high strength comes with reduced ductility compared to the annealed MONEL 400, and welding must be carefully managed to avoid age-hardening cracks in the heat-affected zone. --- ### **Product Applications** MONEL Alloy K-500 is specified for critical components that demand a combination of high strength and corrosion resistance. * **Marine Engineering:** * **Propeller and pump shafts** for high-performance vessels. * **Fasteners** (bolts, nuts, studs) for marine and offshore structures. * Doctor blades and scrapers in paper manufacturing. * Marine fixtures and components for subsea instruments. * **Oil & Gas:** * **Downhole logging tools and instrumentation housings.** * **Wellhead components**, valve stems, and pump impellers. * **Non-magnetic drill collars** (NMDC) for directional drilling. * **Aerospace & Defense:** * **Non-magnetic components** for guidance systems. * Springs, diaphragms, and chains for corrosive service. * **Chemical Processing:** * Stirrer shafts, scraper blades, and other moving parts in corrosive chemical environments. ### **Summary** **MONEL Alloy K-500 (UNS N05500 / Werkstoff 2.4375)** is a premium, precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that delivers the proven corrosion resistance of MONEL 400 with significantly enhanced strength and hardness. Governed by standards like **DIN 17743** and **DIN 17752**, its unique combination of high mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, and essential non-magnetism makes it an indispensable engineering material for the most demanding applications in marine, oilfield, and aerospace technologies. It is the material of choice when standard corrosion-resistant alloys lack the necessary strength for the application.
