### **Product Introduction: INCONEL® 706 Precipitation Hardening Alloy** **INCONEL® Alloy 706** is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium alloy that offers an exceptional combination of high strength, good fabricability, and excellent weldability. Developed as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive superalloys, it provides outstanding mechanical properties at temperatures up to 650°C (1200°F) while maintaining superior machinability compared to other precipitation-hardening nickel-based alloys. The alloy achieves its high strength through a unique two-step precipitation hardening process involving both gamma prime (γ') and gamma double prime (γ") phases, making it particularly suitable for large-scale rotating components in gas turbine engines and other high-temperature applications. --- ### **Chemical Composition** | Element | Content (%) | |---------|-------------| | **Nickel (Ni)** | 39.0 - 44.0 | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 14.5 - 17.5 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | | **Niobium (Nb)** | 2.5 - 3.3 | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 1.5 - 2.0 | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 0.2 - 0.4 | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.06 max | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.35 max | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.35 max | | **Copper (Cu)** | 0.30 max | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.015 max | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.015 max | --- ### **Physical Properties** | Property | Value | |----------|-------| | **Density** | 8.05 g/cm³ | | **Melting Point** | 1365-1395 °C | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 13.0 W/m·K (at 20°C) | | **Electrical Resistivity** | 1.10 μΩ·m | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 206 GPa | | **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion** | 14.2 μm/m·°C (20-400°C) | | **Specific Heat Capacity** | 440 J/kg·K | | **Magnetic Response** | Slightly magnetic | --- ### **Mechanical Properties** **Solution Annealed Condition:** - **Tensile Strength:** 860-1030 MPa - **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 520-690 MPa - **Elongation:** 20-30% - **Hardness:** 25-35 HRC **Aged Condition:** - **Tensile Strength:** 1240-1380 MPa - **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 1030-1170 MPa - **Elongation:** 12-20% - **Hardness:** 35-42 HRC --- ### **Heat Treatment** **Standard Heat Treatment:** - **Solution Treatment:** 980-1010°C (1800-1850°F), air cool or faster - **Aging Treatment:** 720-740°C (1325-1360°F) for 8 hours, furnace cool to 620°C (1150°F), hold for 8 hours, air cool **Alternative Treatments:** - Direct aging treatments available - Stress relief treatments for welded components --- ### **Key Characteristics & Advantages** 1. **Excellent Strength Properties** - High tensile and yield strength at elevated temperatures - Good creep and stress rupture properties up to 650°C - Superior low-cycle fatigue resistance 2. **Enhanced Fabricability** - Outstanding machinability for a precipitation-hardening alloy - Good weldability using conventional methods - Suitable for both hot and cold working 3. **Cost-Effective Performance** - Lower cost than cobalt-containing superalloys - Reduced machining costs due to excellent machinability - Favorable strength-to-cost ratio 4. **Microstructural Stability** - Stable mechanical properties during long-term exposure - Good resistance to thermal aging effects - Consistent performance across service life --- ### **Product Applications** **Aerospace Industry:** - Gas turbine engine casings - Turbine disks and rotors - Compressor components - Engine mounts and structural parts **Power Generation:** - Industrial gas turbine components - Turbine wheels and disks - Power transmission shafts - Generator components **Industrial Applications:** - High-strength fasteners and bolting - Pump shafts and impellers - High-temperature tooling - Nuclear reactor components --- ### **International Standards** | Standard Type | Standard Number | Product Form | |---------------|-----------------|--------------| | **AMS** | 5704 | Bar and Forgings | | **AMS** | 5705 | Billet for Reforging | | **ASTM** | B637 | Rod, Bar, and Forgings | | **ASME** | SB-637 | Code Cases | | **DIN** | 2.4699 | Material Number | | **UNS** | N09706 | Unified Numbering System | --- ### **Summary** **INCONEL® Alloy 706** represents an optimal balance between performance and manufacturability in the family of precipitation-hardening superalloys. Its unique combination of high strength, excellent machinability, and good weldability makes it particularly valuable for large, complex components in gas turbine engines and power generation equipment. The alloy's ability to maintain mechanical properties at temperatures up to 650°C, coupled with its cost-effective manufacturing characteristics, has established it as a preferred material for critical rotating components where both performance and production efficiency are essential. Certification to major international standards including AMS and ASTM specifications ensures consistent quality and reliability, providing engineers with a proven material solution for demanding applications requiring high strength-to-weight ratio and superior fatigue resistance.
