### **Technical Datasheet: Nickel 201 (Alloy 201 / UNS N02201)**
#### **1. Introduction**
**Nickel 201** (commercially known as **Alloy 201**, and standardized as **UNS N02201**) is a low-carbon version of commercially pure wrought nickel. With a carbon content of 0.02% maximum, it is specifically designed for high-temperature service where Nickel 200 would be susceptible to embrittlement due to grain-boundary carbide precipitation.
This alloy maintains all the beneficial properties of pure nickel – excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, and good mechanical properties – while providing superior performance in temperatures above **315°C (600°F)**. Nickel 201 is the preferred choice for applications involving continuous exposure to elevated temperatures.
#### **2. Chemical Composition (% Weight)**
The key difference from Nickel 200 is the significantly lower carbon content.
| Element | Content (%) (ASTM B160) | Content (%) (Typical) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Nickel (Ni)** | 99.0 min | ≥ 99.6 |
| **Carbon (C)** | **0.02 max** | **0.01** |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.35 max | 0.20 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | 0.40 max | 0.20 |
| **Copper (Cu)** | 0.25 max | 0.15 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.35 max | 0.15 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.01 max | 0.005 |
#### **3. Physical Properties**
| Property | Metric Unit | Imperial Unit |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 8.89 g/cm³ | 0.321 lb/in³ |
| **Melting Point** | 1435-1445 °C | 2615-2633 °F |
| **Thermal Conductivity** (at 25°C) | 70 W/m·K | 485 BTU·in/hr·ft²·°F |
| **Electrical Resistivity** | 0.095 µΩ·m | 36.5 µΩ·in |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | 186 GPa | 27 x 10⁶ psi |
| **Thermal Expansion Coefficient** (20-100°C) | 13.3 µm/m·°C | 7.4 x 10⁻⁶ in/in·°F |
| **Curie Temperature** | ~ 360 °C | ~ 680 °F |
#### **4. Mechanical Properties (Typical at Room Temperature)**
Properties vary with product form and temper.
**Annealed Condition:**
* **Tensile Strength:** 380 - 480 MPa (55 - 70 ksi)
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 105 - 195 MPa (15 - 28 ksi)
* **Elongation (in 2 inches):** 45 - 55%
**Elevated Temperature Properties (at 500°C/932°F):**
* **Tensile Strength:** ~ 250 MPa (36 ksi)
